Everything is Relative

// September 26th, 2008 // No Comments » // Personal Development, Success Tips

Today’s post is by our friend Michael Jordan Segal. He brings some light to what we experience in life good or bad and to always look at what is good and what we can learn. The story is a great reminder to me and I hope to you, look around and see all the good that is there and focus on it to bring more of it to you.

Everything is Relative

There is a famous saying: “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” At times, human beings are not satisfied with what they have. People seem to do well until, unfortunately, they experience a loss. Then, usually, they want to be better – to experience the “green grass.” It’s human nature to always want to be better, to have more. Isn’t that what is meant by the phrase “dream big?” At times, dreaming big might be great; however, at other times one should be thankful for what one has.

Consider the story of the 85 year old grandmother taking her 5 year old grandson, Johnny, to the beach for the first time. She was so excited. She bought Johnny a brand new complete outfit for his first time at the beach: new cap, new swimsuit, new t-shirt, new shoes and a new sand bucket with a shovel.

They walked to the beach holding hands. As they got to the sand, Johnny said, “Grandma, because I can’t swim I won’t go near the water; so I’ll just dig up the sand with my new shovel far from the sea.”

However, Johnny had difficulty digging up the hard sand far from the water. Therefore, he said, “Grandma, this sand is too hard. Can I get close to the water where the sand is easier to dig?” Johnny quickly added, “But I promise I won’t go in the water.”

Hesitantly, the grandmother looked into Johnny’s begging big eyes and said, “Okay, but promise you won’t go in the water.”

Johnny screamed with glee, “I promise.” As he was close to the ocean he was having such a good time, digging and digging with ease in the soft sand. Unfortunately, a huge wave came on the shore and swallowed up little Johnny, taking him out to sea.

With her vigilant eyes, watching him from afar, his grandmother screamed, “Oh my God! Oh my God! Help me God!”

Just then, another huge wave thundered onto the beach from the ocean and “spit forth” little Johnny safely back on the shore.

Elated, the grandmother ran toward the boy and tightly hugged her 5 year old grandson. Wiping tears from her eyes she cried out as she looked toward the heavens, “Thank you God! Thank you so much!”

She then looked back down at her little sweet Johnny. She once again quickly looked back at the heavens and screamed, “Hey…Where’s his new cap!?”

Life is full of people who are not satisfied and not thankful for what they have. Many times people are constantly dwelling on what they have lost, rather than being satisfied and thankful for what they still have left. Believe me, I speak from experience.

When I was 19 and well on my way to fulfilling my life-long dream of becoming a surgeon, I walked into a convenience store which was in the process of being robbed. One of the thieves shot me in the back of my head, leaving me for dead. However, I fooled everyone. Sure, I have my disabilities and I used to constantly dwell on the many things I had lost, being negative, saying, “Before I was shot I was athletic, now I can barely walk (with a significant limp), my arm is very weak, I speak somewhat slowly, my voice is hoarse. Before I was shot I could do 500 things really well, after the shooting, I can do only 200 things well. For a long time, I was constantly dwelling on the 300 things I had lost.” However, eventually I began focusing on the 200 things I could still do. It wasn’t easy and it took me a long time, but refocusing one’s attitude is crucial – not merely for people shot in the head, not merely for people who are sick, but for everyone. Having a more positive attitude is vital and essential.

One of my friends had a stroke. I would always try to encourage him by trying to get him to refocus on the positive. It was not easy but it was slowly working and he was improving. He still had a long way to go but he was getting there. He was always asking, “How long did it take you to walk? I hope I will be able to walk again.”

I would say to him, “Everyone is different. Even though I have problems walking, my hopes and prayers are that one day you’ll be able to walk.” With that statement I limped out of the hospital room.

When I visited my friend the next week I immediately asked him to “tell me something good.” He started by saying he had walked 60 feet with a cane in therapy, but just then his doctor (whom I knew) came in and asked how he was doing.

“Fine,” replied my friend, “but I just want to be able to walk perfectly again – just like Mike.” I stood there, a little shocked, but I said to myself, “He’s just started on the road to recovery. He’s beginning to think positive.”

Another friend of mine once told me that he used to feel sorry when he would see people who needed walkers. However, I will never forget what he said after that: “I would give anything if my daughter (diagnosed with a possible brain tumor and currently needing a wheel chair) could progress to the point where she just needed a walker.” He prays for that; I pray for that; and many other people are praying for that.

Again, “Be thankful for what you have, and set your goals for higher things.” The world is full of many horrible things, as well as many wonderful things. Sometimes a person is constantly looking at the “horrible” things. However, my hopes are that they will be able to find the beauty in life. It’s there – if you look for it!

Plan for your success

// September 9th, 2008 // No Comments » // Home Business Systems, Success Tips

Plan for your successThe house is a mess, the kids need a ride somewhere, you haven’t sat down in hours, and you have 10 minutes to eat something.

It’s 1 p.m., you’ve been working non-stop to finish a project because your boss is breathing down your neck, and it’s time for a quick, 20-minute lunch before getting back to the grind.

We often face situations similar to these two. Normally, we choose to think one step ahead. “I am tired, hungry and stressed out. I need to eat something quick. I don’t care what it is!” Unfortunately, those decisions come back to haunt us in the future, only adding to the stress already in our lives.

Many people come to me to learn about running a home business in these situations. They take the first action step to change the life they are living to move towards the life they want to live. However, most only think of that one step they look at what could be the solution they are looking for. Only looking one step ahead, it only gets you to one place-one step ahead. You get what you focus on and if you only look one step ahead you will always get that step.

Before you look into getting into a home business, you must look at why you are looking. What do you want to create? Do you want more time freedom? Do you want more money, both? Ask yourself these simple questions and write down what you want, plan ahead plan two steps ahead, maybe three. Live with intent, make a decision of want you want then make a plan to get it.

After a long day at the office, a longer commute, doing laundry, reading books, and working on night school homework, you might have to decide between the life you want and a couch that is screaming your name. Another difficult decision we face on a regular basis, and once again we often choose to think one step ahead. “I need to rest – I’m so drained!”

The difference between one step ahead and two steps ahead can mean the difference between achieving your goals, creating the lifestyle you want. Starting a business part-time and moving to that second step which is the freedom you seek. Two steps ahead, we are still tired, stressed and cranky, BUT also determined, committed and able to see the big picture.

What is the BIG PICTURE? It’s different for everyone. Having a few thoughts that motivate and inspire you will help fight through step one and see that vision. Here are a few:

  • “My self-confidence is going to be so much higher because I’ve struggled through a difficult situation and found a way to conquer it!”
  • “I’ve had to find a way to deal with things during a very stressful time in my life. I can’t wait to see what I can do without all the stress!”
  • “I’m going to be able to keep up with my kids and be a part of their lives for a long time!”
  • “Why shouldn’t my health be the most important thing in my life – it doesn’t make me selfish, just smart!”
  • “If there is one thing I have complete control over, it’s my health and wealth. I am going to do whatever it takes to figure out a way because I have pride in who I am!”

Step Two” reminds us how important consistency is in reaching our goals and helps us envision that beautiful feeling you get when you work hard to achieve something. What would it be like if you could have a home business that you put 10-15 hours a week into while working your other job and by the end of your first year you are able to walk away from the Boss breathing down your neck, the commute in traffic and live the life you planned, that second step! Where will you go now?

Start practicing now. Step One – “Oh, what a great idea. I should try that sometime, but I really have to go clean my oven.” Step Two – “What a great idea. I’m going to come up with three things that will motivate and inspire me each time I have to choose between a healthy and unhealthy decision, and I’m going to write them down so I see them on a regular basis! Now, I’m going to go clean my oven!”

Dreading the day? Sick of being broke?

// August 19th, 2008 // No Comments » // Home Business Income, Personal Development, Success Tips

Dreading the day? Sick of being broke? We all of choices to make on how we will face a new day and week. Home many of us have dreaded Monday and the drudger of work? What if you could make the change, would you? What if you could work from home or a destination of your choice, work for yourself running a home business and help others achieve the success they desire also, would you make that choice?

Each of us has two distinct choices to make about what we will do with our lives each day we wake up. The first choice we can make is to be less than we have the capacity to be. To earn less. To have less. To read less and think less. To try less and discipline ourselves less. These are the choices that lead to an empty life. These are the choices that, once made, lead to a life of constant apprehension instead of a life of wondrous anticipation.

And the second choice? To do it all! To become all that we can possibly be. To read every book that we possibly can. To earn as much as we possibly can. To give and share as much as we possibly can. To strive and produce and accomplish as much as we possibly can. All of us have the choice.

To do or not to do. To be or not to be. To be all, or to be less, or to be nothing at all.

Like the tree, it would be a worthy challenge for us all to stretch upward and outward to the full measure of our capabilities. Why not do all that we can, every moment that we can, the best that we can, for as long as we can?

Our ultimate life objective should be to create as much as our talent and ability and desire will permit. To settle for doing less than we could do is to fail in this worthiest of undertakings. Results are the best measurement of human progress. Not conversation. Not explanation. Not justification.

Results! And if our results are less than our potential suggests that they should be, then we must strive to become more today than we were the day before. The greatest rewards are always reserved for those who bring great value to themselves and the world around them as a result of whom and what they have become.

Pay the Price

The Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you’re willing to pay the price.

Make Your Years Count

// August 11th, 2008 // No Comments » // Personal Development

Yesterday was my birthday, and I spent the whole day in a complete state of gratitude and reflection. I was sent a birthday wish via email and I took some time to look and take stock. Here is what the email said:

“Don’t just count your years, make your years count.”
Ernest Meyers

What matters most in life is often viewed as peripheral to the things that we usually focus on. Passion takes a backseat to production, wellness to working, and balance to busyness. The old adage that “life is not a dress rehearsal” is so true. We act to the contrary by putting off what is truly important or indulge in things that are not. On your birthday, stop focusing on your age and start meditating on your life at this exact moment. How can you make it better? During the next year, reshuffle your priorities. Spend more time with family and friends, take care of your body and health by eating well and exercising regularly.  Offer to help others in need. Discover what matters most to you, and make your daily life into a true reflection of those ideas, beliefs, and attitudes…

You see my life is amazing, really it is. Just over a year and half ago I went through what was mentioned in the email above. I looked at my life and saw it as a downward spiral. From the outside looking in, it was good, full busy, stuff… However, my internal feelings were of despair, unhappiness, fear, and anger- just to name a few. I was working all the time, I was not present in my family’s life and this had to change. So I looked at what made me happy. Allison and I sat down and really looked at where we wanted to be in the future. What life do we want to design?  Here is the list we came up with:

  • Be present in our children’s lives
  • Live a sustainable green lifestyle
  • Be prosperous financially
  • Help other become prosperous
  • Travel with our children regularly
  • Live each day, one at a time successfully

So that is what we did, we started a home business because all our research pointed in that direction. We found a business that we could work from anywhere so that we could accomplish our goal of traveling. We found a business that has a low environmental impact for day to day operations. Something that is high yield in its compensation for our service, and above all else a business that allows us to serve people.

Each day I get up with my kids and spend more than half my day playing and laughing with them, each day I assist others in finding their passion, each day I design my day and live it, each day is amazing.

Now, if you would have asked me 2 years ago if happiness was in my future I would have said “no, I am stuck, this is my life? What happened to my dreams? Where did it go?” Now I am a testament that with some courage, faith and commitment to stay focused, you can live the life you desire. I talk with many people each and every day that are unhappy with the way their life is going but lack the commitment to change it. Was this an easy path? No.

Do I still have to work at it? Yes, each day and every day.

We have all heard the stories of some catastrophic circumstance that leads us to change; illness, death, loss something like that. I am here to encourage you to make the change now, focus on the life you want to live. My life is amazing, did I have a great birthday, yes! The greatest gift is that every day is a birthday to me now and for that I am grateful.

Life is a playground, play well!
